CSM Jerry Garcia enlisted in November 1977 as a Signal Soldier (Telephone Installer and Lineman). Before retiring with 21 years of service, Command Sergeant Major Garcia served in every leadership position, from Squad Leader to Platoon Sergeant, and First Sergeant to Battalion Command Sergeant Major. His Army career has taken him to assignments at Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Campbell, KY, Fort Drum, NY, Fort Hood, TX, Republic of Germany, and South Korea.


He served two tours as a Paratrooper with 35th Signal Brigade, and as part of a Long Range Surveillance Detachment (Airborne).


In 1996 Command Sergeant Major Garcia was selected as the Hispanic Image Award recipient for the Army, and in the same year, was inducted into the prestigious Sergeant Audie Murphy Club. As First Sergeant, Command Sergeant Major Garcia worked with and mentored four Company Commanders, and as Command Sergeant Major did the same for two Battalion Commanders. During his tenure in the Army, Command Sergeant Major Garcia was deployed to several contingency operations, culminating with Operation Desert Storm in 1991.


Command Sergeant Major Garcia’s awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Army Commendation Medal (ten awards), the Army Achievement Medal (three awards), the Airborne badge, Air Assault badge, various service medals, and the German marksmanship badge (bronze). In 2001, Command Sergeant Major Garcia obtained a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts, with Minors in Management, and Spanish.
